Salon Christine becomes the first and only green Aveda Concept Salon in Lawrenceville. The artsy and bohemian salon sitting fashionably on the corner of Hatfield and 49th Street is a direct reflection of owner Christine Goodis' extensive experience in the art and fashion worlds.

Spending many years studying at London sassoons, and working her way to a nomination as "Master Stylist" of Pittsburgh and a presidency of the Pittsburgh chapter of the Art and Fashion group, Goodis was ready to open her third salon. Since April of 2011, doors have been opened to both new and loyal clientele, many of whom have been around for 25 years.

Salon Christine is staffed with master colourists, using every sort of colour from basic touchups to balayage and dimensional glossing sheens, starting at $67. Customized haircuts are styled to the needs of each person, and like any spa of its caliber, waxing, threading, and nails are also available. Salon Christine also offers elaborate "experiences" where private parties can have the salon to themselves for five hours or have a photo session with a professional photographer. The salon is completely green, utilizing both plant and flower based color for all of its clients.

Goodis loves her new location, stating a supportive, growing neighborhood with a unique artistic flair as qualities that brought her to Lawrenceville.

"I wanted to walk and or ride my bicycle to work", says Goodis.

In addition to moving her business to the area, Goodis is also a new resident who is relishing her new spot. When asked what she thinks of the area, only one word would do.

"Fabulous", she says.

MARCH WINDS OF CHANGE ARE HERE

A deeply personal, intensely thought out and exciting new chapter of my life has begun, with you included!


Long ago, of another lifetime and age, another era and mindset, I was a mere 19 years of age. I left my wild flower country settings, and ventured into downtown Pittsburgh to find a job. I was so naive to city working lifestyles.  At that time, the horizon of the city from the parkway east, was barely visible due to the amount of smog from the working mills that spewed their toxins into our precious atmosphere and lungs. However, It was the 1980's and life was grand on many levels of existence. The Jenkins Arcade was still alive. The Syria Mosque was still alive. The Bank Center was still alive.  Money was grandiose and abundant for most business's. Disco was lighting the nights and I took full advantage of my new love of downtown Pittsburgh's, day and night life.


After a few salons that I worked at, I quickly built a respectful and talented reputation as one of Pittsburgh's finest female hairstylists. I worked 15 hours per day and I was happily scheduled with a full booking of guests up to and including 3 months in advance. My dedication and focus to hairdressing, took me to London where I studied at the most prestigious school in the world...Vidal Sassoon Academy. Those exquisite fundamental basic structures advanced and supported my passion and career to opening my first salon on Wood street, now 17 years ago. I flourished there for 12 long years. It was a tucked away second floor secret gem in the historical Arrott Building in downtown Pittsburgh, that many of you still talk about and enjoyed being a part of. For a variety of reasons, employees came and went , people fell in love with their hair...and Salon Christine was happily buzzing in creativity. I traveled all over Europe, I cut hair in tiny villages on the Aegean Sea of Greece, the Mediterranean sea of Italy, Amsterdam, England, Scotland, Wales,and the Italian and French Riviera . I cut hair in the deserts of Arizona on a cacti stump and I cut hair in the Kivas of the Bandelier National Monument in New Mexico. I studied perfumology in the village of Grasse, France. I was a platform educational artist for 3 major international hair companies. I personally educated hairdressers in every corner of Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, Ohio, Kentucky. I was president of the international Art and Fashion group for the Pittsburgh chapter. I was the world renowned Vivienne Mackinders's assistant and learned more than I ever could have afforded to learn in a monetary way. One of my greatest lessons so far, is to step away from my subject matter, and broaden my horizon of visual approach to the subject at hand. In short, think out of the box, and continue to reinvent and evolve my own personal wheel. That leads me to many beautiful doors that continue to open with like minded kindhearted people along the way. I have learned, that " those or that which no longer serves you, leaves room for those or that which does". For every door that closes, leaves an open ray of light of growth on so many levels.


Life took its course, and i decided  that for more exposure,  it was time to close my first  salon and open my second salon as an Aveda salon on Penn Avenue in the cultural district. I fell in love with the Aveda philosophy for the environment and the betterment of every woman or mans hair in a greener approach. I was part of Gallery Crawl and the Pittsburgh Cultural Trust for the past 4 years. I promoted and gave opportunities to expose local  Pittsburgh artists their very first art openings...and they quite successfully did just that!  Hundreds of people walked through Salon Christine during Gallery Crawl evenings. Salon Christine has lived on Penn Avenue now for 4 happy years.


As most of you know of me, I am a woman of change, deep respect, consideration and leadership. I constantly re invent my own personal wheel, all the while knowing I have done the best I could have done, at the end of each and every night. As my mother once said to me, "you don't know what you don't know, until you know it". Now having exposed , a little bit about my life, over and over again I am constantly approached with frustration by new guests of the salon as well as existing ones, with the parking situation that continues to become more and more frustrating as well as the increasing expense, in the downtown area of Pittsburgh. Parking lots are being bought by individual companies, locking them to lease only clients, increasing their prices , and garages are impossible to find when there is a sports event, a parade or a snow or rain storm. This has greatly affected the consistency of my business as well as so many other small business's downtown.


And so.....I have listened to you, and now I am able and taking action, for your ease and betterment, to provide yet another charming and lovely new salon location with FREE parking directly in front of the new salon.

This new location is opening on April 5, and we are already booked for our opening first few weeks. Excellent responses have supported this very thought out move. We will be exactly 3 miles from our current salon, straight up the road and right past the strip district. The neighborhood of Lawrenceville has welcomed the zen atmosphere of Salon Christine with letters of approval already..and we haven't even opened as of yet. We are a dog friendly salon and we will accommodate your needs at almost any hour day and night that you need. We will have Sunday brunch hair, in the near future, from 12-3. Lots of fun events and gatherings will be held for a girls get together or a personal appointment for just your own needs. Consider this new space to be "your personal Eden and oasis".


We are offering everything that we offer now, but in a smaller art studio atmosphere. Our phone number is the same. Our website is the same. Our dynamic Aveda products are the same. Our staff is the same. Our services are even better and  our atmosphere is going to ROCK!! We are also directly connected to a charming and peaceful massage boutique studio that you may take advantage of before or after your hair service.


And of course.....the MOST important part.....our beloved Lord Oliver will continue to be the grandest and most polite and loving host of all!!

The end of summer brings so many thoughts and memories. Personally speaking, i had an extremely challenging summer. Plenty of people that i know, experienced major changes this year so far. I do hope that with a new season approaching us, that your lives are filled with peace and good health and lots of genuine love. My personal life has turned around for the better and I'm ever so grateful for that. Thank you for your patience with me, during a very grueling and disgustingly hot summer. (Miss Christine does not do well in humid heat...her wings melt)

So, tell me your thoughts on Lord Oliver's new gates at the salon. Everyone thus far, is digging them and the craftsmanship behind them was simple and affordable. Oliver wants to personally thank all of you, for allowing him to sit on your laps, for playing with him, for adoring him, for his gifts and his treats from everyone and for simply making the salon an even more enjoyable place to visit.

OK everyone, the last Gallery Crawl of the year is fast approaching. I am personally ever so pleased to announce and evening of "Crimson", see "GALLERY CRAWL" info below. The evening consists of 5 incredible artists, and their version of the feminine beauty and body. Opera music, a cotton candy machine and dim lights will coax you into an all encompassing sensory journey of beauty. I'm looking forward to ......watching you enjoy this art exhibit.

To all new and existing guests...holiday get-togethers and dinners and events and parties are just around the corner. All hours are booking up months in advance at Salon Christine; morning/afternoon and especially evening. My personal favorite Aveda product for autumn, are the chakra balancing sprays and candles. For all of your 7 chakras, there is a balancing aromatherapy oil to ease and soothe into your home or body at the end of a long day. These sprays are plant based and organic, flavoring your home or body from all over the world. the candles are soy based and extra sensational when you dip your fingers into the warm wax. soy can be used as a body cream after its softened!

Our special autumn/winter treatments are beginning. warm paraffin wax manicures and pedicures, aromatherapy steam facials and hot oil scalp massages are just a few of Aveda's cool weather treats to warm up with at Salon Christine. Salon Christine is excited to feature, yet again, clay artist Heather George and her art colleague, Brenda Roger.

Heather George and Brenda Roger, both studio and teaching artists from the Pittsburgh area, join forces to show their collaborative works.  Having both worked almost exclusively behind a potter's wheel (Heather) or a sewing machine (Brenda), this show has provided both artists with an inspiring break from the norm.  Using each other as muse and playing off of each others expertise and personalities, this newly formed art-making duo will be showing work that is not only functional, staying true to who they are, but also sensual, adhering to the theme of the show.  Works will include ceramics, jewelry and sculpture.

Curtis is a Video Artist & Photographer, whose work has been shown both locally & nationally at some of the most prestigious museums across the country.


Curtis is best known for his traveling exhibition, John & Sarah - A Family's Journey to Freedom and Elders - An African American Oral History.


Some of his other accomplishments include: Being chosen as a Millennium Artist for the Mid-Atlantic Arts Foundation, receiving various Artists & Residencies and conducting Community & Educational Workshops.

 

Regarding this particular show, Curtis states that, "For me, 'Image Interlude: Episode in Time,' is about the Exploration & Manipulation of Imagery. It's all about the Rhythm, the POP and the Interlude of the Composition."

I am fortunate to experience dynamic women and men, all day, every day at my salon. Most of you are working non-stop and wearing an incredible amount of hats of responsibility and performance per day. You are daughters and sons, mothers and fathers, sisters and brothers, grandmothers and grandfathers, aunts and uncles, husbands and wife's,  leaders at home and in your job and community. You fit absolutely everything in, from work responsibilities to family responsibilities. You do it all and you do your best and you do a really good job because you care.

I find that in my travels from Pittsburgh to Santa Fe New Mexico, that east coast people are running themselves into the ground. Everything is on a scheduled time restraint. Everyone is creating an atmosphere of "this is due immediately and so is everything else". As a matter of fact, i lost a guest this week because i myself, was running 4 minutes behind schedule. FOUR MINUTES! What does this say about people, their expectations of others as well as themselves, and the lack of allowing any grace time for anything or anyone. On the same afternoon that this guest left due to "the condition" of my running 4 minutes late, i also gained 2 lovely new guests. Both were looking for complete peace, time to themselves, and interaction with me to give them a better cut than what they walked in with. Both left happy and rescheduled. (i was still running 4 minutes behind for both of the happier guests that day)

People come to Salon Christine to be pampered. People come to Salon Christine to relax and take a deep breath. People compliment Salon Christine's staff for being cordial and professional. Salon Christine is known for excellent personalized haircolour and haircutting. The atmosphere is always comfortable, the music is always easeful and the service is professional. Bonus...everyone has the opportunity to hug our seriously happy and polite, Lord Oliver.

I encourage "you" to remember to relax and take the time to enjoy a much needed break. If you are spending your days rushing from one appointment to the other, i suggest taking a look at your personal calendar and scheduling some "you " time asap.

I was that little girl that never had the courage to catch anything other than rain drops and snowflakes on the tip of my tongue. Sports? Forget it. I bruised and I cried and I was the last one to be picked on the bleachers in gym class. I couldn't swim and I sure couldn't even pass gym class with anything above a grade D.
 As any young competitive and curious mind wanders, I thought, "I can do this", and I decided to build my own version of physical strength. The pastures and back country paths that I walked on, turned into glorious and furious running events for me. I even coerced my younger brothers to drive my old Chevy in back of me. The moon was high and they were under age, on these back country paths, with the headlights lighting the way and me running in front of them as they cruised with the windows down and some sort of 70's rock or funk music on the radio at full blast. Oh, the memories are priceless.
Today I do yoga. Today I am an excellent runner. I may not be able to catch a softball and I may just continue to duck in complete and utter fear from a volleyball plowing full force through the air, but running became my strength and freedom and yoga became essential to my well being.
Schoolhouse Yoga is fantastic. It offers many different levels in 3 different locations. I love to go to the Schoolhouse Yoga in the strip district, next door to my favorite grocery store, Right by Nature. I attend my class and then I go to the grocery store after class, to fill my reusable cloth bags with fresh greens, fruits and fish. Kombucha is my drink of choice these days, other than the 64 ounces of water that I drink on a daily basis. Often I will cut a hunk of fresh ginger and steep it in boiling water, and that will be my hot drink to indulge in, before climbing into my favorite place in the world...my bed, my sanctuary of fluffy pillows, billowing blankets and colorful dreams. At the end of each and every day, my thoughts go through the bedtime checklist. Do you have a bedtime checklist? Mine includes the people and family that I know and love, wishing them joy,peace and good health. After I go through that list, I thank myself for doing the best that I could do, just for today. ZZZZZZZ..........
So, my friends, my intentions this year involve many. The checklist has begun to present itself, with check marks beside each intention.
